A new guest has checked into The White Lotus. Sandra Bernhard has officially joined the cast of the HBO anthology’s upcoming fourth season, which will unfold in France.
Bernhard confirmed the news herself on Instagram, writing, “Heading to France this summer. What a delight.” The actor joins an ensemble that already includes Helena Bonham Carter, Steve Coogan, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Marissa Long, Alexander Ludwig, Chris Messina and AJ Michalka. HBO Max previously revealed the casting news on X, posting in the caption: “Reservations confirmed. Helena Bonham Carter, Steve Coogan, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Marissa Long, Alexander Ludwig, Chris Messina, and AJ Michalka are headed to #TheWhiteLotus.”
As with most seasons of the series, details about the characters and storyline are being kept tightly under wraps while creator Mike White finalizes the cast. Production is expected to take place largely at Château de La Messardière, a historic 19th-century palace that now operates as a luxury hotel in Saint-Tropez on the French Riviera. Reports indicate the story may also expand beyond the resort to locations across the Riviera and Paris, with the Cannes Film Festival potentially playing a role in the plot. Notably, this will be the first season not filmed at a Four Seasons property; earlier installments were set at resorts in Hawaii, Italy and Thailand.
The Emmy-winning drama follows wealthy travelers and hotel staff at the fictional White Lotus resort chain, where tensions rise among guests and employees before a mysterious death eventually comes to light. The series has become one of HBO’s most decorated hits, earning 16 Emmy wins and a total of 66 nominations. White writes, directs and executive produces alongside David Bernad and Mark Kamine.
Bernhard brings decades of experience to the cast, with more than 100 acting credits. She is widely recognized for roles in The King of Comedy, Hudson Hawk and Without You I’m Nothing, as well as for playing Nancy Bartlett Thomas on Roseanne and Nurse Judy Kubrak on the FX drama Pose. Her recent work includes appearances in Marty Supreme and the Apple TV+ series Severance, where she portrayed a formidable scientist late in Season 2.
