Nearly four decades after it first poked fun at sci-fi blockbusters, Spaceballs is officially getting a sequel film. The long-anticipated follow-up is scheduled to hit theaters on April 23, 2027, aligning with the 40th anniversary of the original film.

A number of familiar faces are set to return: Rick Moranis reprises his role as Dark Helmet, joined by Bill Pullman as Lone Starr, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, and George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz. Legendary comedian and filmmaker Mel Brooks—who turns 100 in June and originally wrote and directed the 1987 classic—will also appear again as Yogurt.

The new installment brings in fresh talent as well, with Josh Gad taking on a major role both on-screen and behind the scenes, co-writing the script with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. The cast expands to include Keke Palmer, Anthony Carrigan, and Lewis Pullman, the son of Bill Pullman.

While specific story details and even the official title remain under wraps, the sequel is expected to continue the franchise’s signature satire of major sci-fi universes like Star Wars, Star Trek, and Alien. The announcement itself leaned into that humor with a playful message: “Thirty-eight years ago, there was only one ‘Star Wars’ trilogy,” followed by a rundown of the countless expansions that came after … But in 38 years, There has only ever been one ‘Spaceballs.’ Until now…”
